"...this government urges the Union Government that the Constitution of India should be rewritten afresh, having regard to the changing needs, while preserving the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the nation..."
And the reasons that the government of Tamil Nadu gave for such a demand was......to ensure social justice...to provide for minority and gender rights...to implement true federalism...in the Indian Union.
This is what I told a colleague in office and I say that here too.
The constitution's drafting committee in 1947 was headed by a person from a humble beginning who rose to become a revered lawmaker. The constituent assembly was filled with freedom fighters, intelligentsia, legal luminaries, social activists and statesmen but no politicians.
If we cannot live and work with such a rule book designed by demigods, pray what would happen to this country if we allowed today's mortals in Parliament to scrap the present rule book and rewrite it all over again from scratch.
And my colleague responds - This very same people, with the very same ideological background, decades ago called for the state seceding from the Union. And their present call to rewrite the constitution isn't that dramatic anyways !! So whats the surprise !!
I hope India's destiny does not come to such a pass.
