Good pick by Obama. Sen. Joe Biden makes up for the foreign policy lacking in Obama.
It became a forgone conclusion once the electrifying foreign trip of Obama did not bring in the swell in poll numbers. Somehow the glorifying in Europe did not enthuse America.
Obama was left with to choose someone who would help blunt McCain's onslaught on foreign relations or pick his nemesis Hillary Clinton.
Personally I think the Obama camp, by not actively engaging with the Clinton camp, is walking a political tight rope. Obama, perhaps, thinks that the Clinton era is finally over and its now that of the new generation led by him. By not realising this the Clintons perhaps are not seeing political reality, according to Obama.
On the other hand, the Clintons especially Bill does not take too kindly Obama's attempts to wish away and ignore 8 years of his presidency. They probably are miffed that he would hark back to the Kennedy era rather than anything recent. This probably has forced them to dig in and wait.
Essentially both are gambling politically, Obama his presidential bid and Clinton his presidential legacy. If Obama is able to pull it off without Clinton's blessings, he would have pulled perhaps the greatest change over in the party's modern history. If he does not, as the Clintons had predicted during the primaries, it would not only bury Obama, it would revive the Clintons.
All this depends on how deftly Hillary handles herself and her die hard supporters. Any suspicion that she even indirectly encouraged her supporters and kept up the anti-Obama feelings in them, would come back to bite her. I don't believe she is stupid. I am sure she would play along until the right time comes about.
And so picking Hillary as his VP candidate would have been an unwise choice for both Obama and Hillary, Obama wanting a clean break and Hillary not wanting to do anything with his campaign if he were to loose in November.
Given the choices he was left with, Biden is the best one he could have picked. Biden would certainly fill in his foreign relations gap leaving Obama to concentrate on the economy.
Think about it, whenever McCain steams ahead in his foreign policy boat guess who would be there to stop him - Joe Biden. It will be quite funny and interesting to see Presidential candidate McCain having dog fights with his opponents running mate.
